I guess it is common knowledge in the art world, but when I saw this and other African masks in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I was surprised how clearly they influenced the likes of Picasso and other Modern artists in the early 20th century. Ironic that one was considered "primitive" while those who copied it are considered avant garde geniuses.
